Learn More About PremiumSUMMARY: Arkansas Driver's Manuals

The Arkansas Driver Services (ODS) provides driving manuals and handbooks to help you become a safer driver. Available DMV manuals include the AR driver's license study guide, manual for commercial drivers, and the motorcycle endorsement study guide. You can also read the AR Vehicle Code if you're interested in vehicle and traffic laws.

On this page, you'll find links to all the DMV handbooks and study guides you'll need to pass your driver's license tests in Arkansas.

Drivers handbooks are available for new drivers and new residents applying for learner's permits or driver licenses. The AR ODS also publishes handbooks for drivers of specialty vehicles, including motorcycles and commercial vehicles.

Arkansas Driver's Handbook

The Arkansas Driver License Study Guide (REV 2012) is a driving manual designed to help you pass the required driver's license exams and learn how to drive safely. The driver's manual is also available in Spanish (REV 2011).

This driver handbook is designed for people applying for an AR learner's permit or driver's license.

You will learn about road rules and regulations in the DMV handbook for drivers, such as:

  • Safe driving techniques and safety equipment.
  • Sharing the road with other vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians.
  • Adjusting vehicle speed for weather conditions.
  • State traffic rules.
  • Handling emergency situations.

The Arkansas driving manual also covers how to:

  • Apply for your AR driver's license.
  • Prepare for your road skills test.

The questions on your written driver's license exam are based on the information in the DMV handbook.

Don't Forget an Online Practice Test!

A perfect complement to studying the Arkansas driving manual is using an online practice test to prepare for the written exam. It's a great way to ensure passing on your first attempt.

Motorcycle Operator Manual

If you're going to apply for your motorcycle license in Arkansas, check out the Arkansas Motorcycle Endorsement Study Guide(REV 2009). You'll find information in the DMV manual about:

  • Proper riding gear.
  • Basic motorcycle control.
  • How to navigate intersections.
  • Carrying passengers.
  • Riding in a group safely.

The driver's manual for motorcycles has practice questions to help you prepare for the Arkansas ODS written exam. You can also take a practice test available online.

Learn more about the motorcycle driver's handbook on our Motorcycle Manual page.

AR Commercial Driver's Manual

The Arkansas Commercial Driver License Manual (REV 2003) will help you learn the rules of driving commercial vehicles and study for the CDL written and road skills tests.

The commercial driving manual covers the information you'll need to obtain your commercial driver's license (CDL). You'll learn all about:

License
  • Vehicle inspections.
  • What to do in an emergency.
  • Transporting cargo and passengers safely.
  • Air brakes.
  • Combination vehicles.
  • Transporting hazardous materials.

Also included in the driver's manual are sample questions to prepare you for the written knowledge exam. For more DMV handbook questions, you can take an online CDL practice test.

Arkansas Vehicle Code

You can view the AR Vehicle Code online to find details about the rules and regulations concerning vehicles, driver's licenses, and traffic laws in Arkansas.

When you arrive at the Arkansas State Legislature website, select 'Title 27 Transportation.'

The vehicle code provides more detailed information than the DMV handbook or the Arkansas driving manual.

However, the code is written in legal language, which can be challenging to understand. You may wish to start by reading the Arkansas driver's handbook before reading the vehicle code.

Reading the code may be useful if you've recently received a traffic ticket and would like the charge explained. For information about how to respond to a traffic citation, read our Traffic Tickets in AR page.
